Thinking about upgrading from the ATH-AD700? Looking for slightly more bass? My experience …

I would call myself a big time Audio Technica fan. I’ve had the Audio Technica AD700s for nearly four years, and have listened to them for over 5,000 hours (4 – 8 hours a day). Personally, my driving motive behind this purchase was to get a little more “oomph” in the low end, compared to what I was already getting. I listen to mostly electronic, downtempo, and classical on these headphones. After realizing I’ve had them for so long, and noticing tearing in the pleather details on the sides, I decided to finally upgrade.

AD900x = balance for great gaming and music

I really have liked my older AD700 headphones for PC gaming these past several years. They just do “okay” with some music genres though, and I wanted to upgrade to a better sounding headphone that did great for both gaming and music.

reasonable price, comfortable, but there are cheaper alternatives

An amazing listening experience

I have always used closed eared headphones because of travel and picked these up for my brother in law. I have to say compared to by MoFI blues the sound is just as clear and a bit wider. The reference I can make is the Blue closed feels like it is my concert, and the open headphones make me feel like I’m at a live event. Both are enjoyable.

AD700s vs AD900xs and other info

I stepped up from my Audio Technica AD700s. I had them for six years and I tripped over the cord breaking the jack. Although I will be repairing my AD700s, I never was 100% satisfied with them. The 700s were the first headphones I had with an emphasis on soundstage, and at this point, I will never go to something with significantly reduced soundstage. It’s my main draw, along with other qualities, of course. The 700s were bright, and in a lot of ways were too bright for me. I think it is because of the lack of bass on the 700s. I’m not talking about being a bass-head (I’m not), but a lack of a whole frequency which made the emphasis naturally fall on the mids and then the highs.

They sound great and are very clear sounding headphones

I really want to give these headphones a 5, but I can’t. They sound great and are very clear sounding headphones. If you want a good soundstage, they’re excellent at this price point. So why am I only giving it a 3? Lots of small problems that together just ruin everything.

Fantastic Sounding Headphones at A Reasonable Price

I bought these to replace an older Sennheiser open back headphone that I have. I also have the Audio-Technica ATM50 closed back headphones, which I love, so I thought I’d try the ATH-AD9000X for a new open back headphone.

So close to being the perfect starting point in a quest for great audio…

Let me start this off with these were the most amazing headphones I’d heard up to the time time I returned them. They sound SO GOOD! They were my first open back headphones and everything sounds soooooo huge! Like you’re on a sound stage and everything is happening around you! I had it powered by a mayflower dac/headphone amp and it recreated such subtle tones that I never knew where in my music. It actually made me start to rerip all of my music in a higher bitrate. If you are getting your first set of nicer headphones you owe it to yourself to give these a try! Ok now with the glowing part of the review I can get on to the obviously missing star… It’s the head retention device they use on these… It’s horrible. It’s always just a little too loose. It’s a horrible design and that’s just a tragedy… If only you could have this with a regular headstrap…
